About Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary

National Chambal Sanctuary, also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, is a 5,400 km2 (2,100 sq mi) tri-state protected area in northern India for the protection of the Critically Endangered gharial, the red-crowned roof turtle and the Endangered Ganges river dolphin. Located on the Chambal River near the tripoint of RajasthanMadhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, it was first declared in Madhya Pradesh in 1978, and now constitutes a long narrow eco-reserve co-administered by the three states. Within the sanctuary, the pristine Chambal River cuts through mazes of ravines and hills with many sandy beaches.

Day 1: Delhi – Chambal

Pick up Delhi airport and leave for Chambal, which is around 280 kms and takes around 5 hrs drive. After reaching at Chambal, check in to the lodge. Have lunch and then You can enjoy an afternoon boat ride (short birding session) on Chambal river. After boat ride, back to lodge. Have dinner and retire for the day.

Day 2: Chambal

Morning & afternoon birding session. The most notable bird species of the Chambal is the localized Indian Skimmer. Other notable species include the Small Pratincole, Great Thick-knee, River Tern and Black-bellied Tern. Other species present in the area include Osprey, Black Kite Black-eared Kite, Bonelli’s Eagle, Long- legged Buzzard, Steppe Eagle, Rock Dove, Asian Koel, Brown Boobook (or Brown Hawk-Owl), Sand, Greater Short-toed and Crested Larks, Grey-throated Sand Martin, Masked and Himalayan Wagtails, Desert Wheatear, Rufous-fronted and Plain Prinias, Lesser Whitethroat, Common and Large Grey Babblers and Bank Myna. The river also hosts the Gangetic Dolphin, the endemic fish eating Gharial and Marsh Crocodiles.

 

Day 3: Chambal – Delhi

Morning birding session. After birding back to lodge, check out from lodge and leave for Delhi to board the flight/train for your home.

By Road: Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary is located near National Highway 45 and is well connected by road to cities like Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. You can take a bus/Hire a cab or drive down to the beautiful destination. Time taken to travel from Agra to Chambal is nearly an hour.

By Rail:  The nearest railhead is in Agra at a distance of almost 70 km. Alternatively, you can take a train to Dholpur, which is nearly 80 km away from the sanctuary. Well connected to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, etc. You can hire a taxi from the railway junction to complete the further journey.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Agra which is about 112 km away. Delhi is 260 km away from Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary.
