About Uttrakhand
Uttarakhand is a perfect getaway destination for birders and their families. Awakening with the melody of various species of birds is an exquisite experience.
Uttarakhand is the land of Gods, mountains, spirituality, and birds. Are you aware that of the 1303 species of birds found in India, almost 755 species are found in Uttarakhand? Yes, quite 50% of bird species of India are found in Uttarakhand.
Jim Corbett National Park, Ramnagar, Nainital, Sattal, Pangot are a number of the favored birding spots.
Corbett: The whole area comprises of hills, marshy depressions, grasslands, lake and vast dense forests of Sal trees. Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary has over 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, nearly 600 bird species including high altitude Lammergeirs and Steppe Eagles, and 25 reptiles including Gharial and the fresh water mugger.
Major mammalian species found in the region are chital (spotted deer), sambar (Indian stag), chinkara (Indian gazelle), pada (hog deer) and muntjac (barking deer), jungle cat, leopard cat, striped hyena, dholes (wild dogs), sloth bear, the mighty Indian gaur and the rare fishing cat, wild boars, and ghorals (mountain goats).
Some of the prominent avian residents of the park include the barbet, bulbuls, minivet oriole, wagtail, munia, myna, collared scops, waterfowl, parakeets, flycatchers, babblers, cuckoos, robins, warblers, finches, blue kingfisher, Indian and Great Pied hornbills, among other variety of animals which can be commonly seen adorning the skies of Corbett.
Sattal: The dense oak and pine forest of Sattal is nothing but a paradise for the bird enthusiast. There are innumerable varieties of birds, both resident and migrartory, that are a delight to watch, observe and capture with a camera.
Pangot: Pangot is known for the myriads species of birds that inhabit the region. More than 500 species of birds have been recorded at Pangot including Himalayan Griffon, Blue-winged Minla, Khalij Peasant and Lammergeyer to name a few.
Day 1: Delhi – Ramnagar
Early morning (around 06:00 am) pick from Delhi and leave for Ramnagar, it will take around 270 km, around 5-6 hrs drive. After reaching at Ramnagar, you will be check-in at the pre-booked resort and take some rest. After lunch, you will leave for short birding session. After birding, back to the resort, Have dinner. Overnight stay at resort.
Day 2: Corbett Tiger Reserve (Dhikala)
Wake up early morning, Check out from resort and then morning short birding session in the outskirts of Corbett. After birding session , we will leaving for Dhikala, After reaching at Dhikala, you will be check-in at the pre-booked FRH and take some rest. After lunch, you will leave for afternoon safari. After safari, back to the FRH, Have dinner. Overnight stay at resort.
Day 3: Corbett Tiger Reserve (Dhikala)
We will leave for the morning safari, early morning safaris have more chances for sighting the animals. You explore the fauna and flora of the National Park. This safari lasts for around three and half hours, then return to the FRH. Then freshen up, have breakfast, and rest for a few hours. After lunch, you will leave for another afternoon safari. After the safari, return to the FRH to relax. Enjoy the delicious dinner and overnight stay at the FRH.
Day 4: Corbett Tiger Reserve – Sattal
After morning safari, check out from the FRH. Freshen up, have breakfast then leave for Sattal, which is around 90 km from Dhikala and takes around 2-3 hours drive. you will be check-in at the pre-booked lodge and take some rest. After lunch, you will leave for afternoon birding session. After birding, back to the lodge, Have dinner. Overnight stay at resort.
The area is good to see for Great and Blue-throated Barbet , Kalij Pheasant, Black Francolin, Red-billed Lieothrix, Blue-winged Minla, Nuthatch, Black-lored, Green-backed and Great Tits, Greater and Lesser Yellownape, Grey-headed and Brown-fronted woodpeckers, Grey-treepie, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Bulbuls, Flycatchers, Thrushes, Treecreeper, Striated, White-throated, Rufous-chinned and White-throated Laughingthrushes, many more.
It’s a great opportunity to improve your photography skills. After lunch one can visit to Chanfi river for Crested Kingfisher, water Redstart , Brown Deeper etc. After birding back to resort, have dinner and Overnight stay at resort.
Day 5: Sattal
Wake up early morning, drive to Shyamkhet and Mahesh Khan forest, the area is good to see Rosefinch, Sunbird, Rufous-bellied and Himalayan woodpeckers, Long-tailed Minivet, Warblers Golden-Bush Robin. After lunch kainchi stream good to see forktail, Bush Robin. After birding back to resort, have dinner and Overnight stay at resort.
Day 6: Sattal
Starting as usual morning, we will be walking on Sattal road here one can see minivet, bulbuls, flycatchers, thrushes, yuhina, bunting, Accenture flower pecker and visit to saattal studios. After lunch go to ashram hide only here can see rufous throated partridge, green Maggie, White crested laughing thrush. After birding back to resort, have dinner and Overnight stay at resort.
Day 7: Sattal – Pangot
Early morning, check out from Sattal and leave for Pangot enroute birding trying for some laughing thrushes, Rosefinch, White-tailed Nuthatch, Accenture, Bunting, Yuhina, Sunbirds. After reaching at Pangot, check in at lodge, have lunch and then afternoon birding in and around Pangot. After birding, back to lodge. Have dinner and retire for the day.
Day 8: Pangot
Morning & afternoon Birding session.
At pangot, we will be try for some key species of Pangot are Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Blue-Winged Minla, Spotted & Slaty-Backed Forktail, pulvouus-Bellied Woodpecker, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Khalij Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant.
Day 9: Pangot – Delhi
Wake up early morning and drive to Vinayak Pheasant point, after trying this we will be trying for some forest birds. After lunch, we will leaving for Delhi aiport/railway station to board the train/flight for your home.
By Air: The nearest Airport to reach Corbett is New Delhi (300 kms)and 5-6 hours drive.
By Rail: The nearest Railway station are Ramnagar (13 kms) & Kathgodam (55 kms)
By Road: You can reach Corbett by road is from Delhi (300 kms, 5 – 6 hrs drive), From Kathgodam (55 kms, 1 -2 hrs drive), Nainital (65 km, 2 hrs drive).
